CD Review - Gorguts - From Wisdom To Hate

It’s about time we got some death metal here! I’ve been trying hard to get my hands on the Gorguts albums, being as I’ve heard a lot of great things about them, and they’re Canadian (I’m Canadian in case you didn’t know).

The Quebec metal scene seems to have the best of both worlds in terms of artistic creation and very high levels of technical skill. Gorguts is no different in this sense. The previous album, “Obscura” got a lot of people interested with it’s constant timing changes, tempo changes, and long jazzy riffs. “From Wisdom To Hate” seems to reign in the chaos a small bit, and as a result they’ve become a bit more coherent, but they’ve also lost a small sense of urgency. The vocals are a slight change from typical death metal, as instead of attempting to go low and gurgly, they’re often in the high to mid range area.

“From Wisdom To Hate” offers a good follow-up without copying “Obscura”.
8/10
