Modern Classics - Suffocation - Souls To Deny
Since there’s been a lot of touring and other news from the Suffocation camp, with all the talk of new releases, I decided it might be a good time to look back just to 2004.
I know a lot of fans aren’t going to like what I say, but dare I say it... Souls To Deny is Suffocation’s best album to date. From the very beginning they’ve forged a very unique sound. The majority of Suffocations material is around the slow to mid paced tempo, only a few songs over the course of time have been fast. Evolving over time, the riffs have used weirder time signatures, and become longer and more intricate. Due to the slower nature of their music, Suffocation has gained some popularity from the hardcore crowd, coveting them for their breakdowns.
Souls To Deny sees Suffocation using more hooks, and more harmonies than ever. These aren’t poppy sounding harmonies, oh no, they’re nasty sounding things. It’s the evolution and growth that has put Suffocation on the upper ranks with other death metal bands.
