Album Review: Gorguts - Considered Dead/The Erosion Of Sanity

After obtaining the modern classic “Obscura” and the great “From Wisdom To Hate” I was curious to find out what the beginnings of Gorguts were.

This CD collection will bring you back to a time in the early 90's when death metal was starting to blossom. In the very early 90's, there were only a few bands creating this new form of extreme music. The generic test tube babies unfortunately were right around the corner.

Had a person picked up “Considered Dead” or “The Erosion Of Sanity” back when they were brand new, their entertainment value would’ve been much greater. Both albums however, have not stood the test of time. Bands like Death, Morbid Angel and Suffocation were already going through an evolution in sound at this point in time, while the process was taking much longer for Gorguts.

The song writing takes a small step forward going from “Considered Dead” to “The Erosion Of Sanity”. The lyrical content took a huge jump, going from gore and guts (gore + guts = Gorguts?) to a much more introspective look. The production on “The Erosion Of Sanity” seems a lot better than a lot of other bands at the time as well.

While the quality of the songs at this point in Gorguts career isn’t up to par with hanging with the big boys, it is good enough to place them above the generic clones that would come around very soon.

The shining moment for Gorguts of course came with “Obscura”.

6/10
